Rocks & Donkeys: God Uses the Unexpected

Throughout Scripture, God consistently uses the ordinary, overlooked, and unexpected to accomplish His purposes—and two of the most powerful symbols of that truth are rocks and donkeys.

    Rocks in the Bible

Rocks represent strength, foundation, and testimony.

    • God is called our Rock—our refuge and firm foundation (Psalm 18:2).
    • Stones were set up as memorials to remember what God had done (Joshua 4).
    • Jesus said if people stayed silent, the rocks would cry out (Luke 19:40).

Rocks remind us that God is unchanging, faithful, and worthy of remembrance.

    Donkeys in the Bible

Donkeys represent humility, obedience, and God’s unexpected messengers.

    • A donkey spoke truth to Balaam when he refused to listen (Numbers 22).
    • Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, fulfilling prophecy as the humble King (Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:5).

God used what seemed lowly to carry His message and display His glory.

    The Message

God doesn’t just use the strong or the qualified—
    He uses the willing.

    If God can:

    • Speak through a donkey
    • Use stones to declare His glory

Then He can use any of us.
